Worse off are the older couple – Gautam and Ira, played by Mohit Raina and Diana Penty. These two are written like stick figures. He plays by the rules and she is a bleeding-heart activist. In a scene that borders on unintentional comedy, she tells him, ‘Maine tumse shaadi ki hai Gautam, government of India se nahi.’ He says: Pehleum iss Bhagat Singh revolutionary zone se bahar aajao. My sympathies lay with Mohit Raina, who was so good in the recent Mumbai Diaries 26/11. There is little that he can do to make such a lifeless character work.

Kunal Deshmukh’s direction is fair. What was required for a love story of this kind was extremely sensitive direction, but that is lacking. Music is quite good. ‘Barbaadiyan’, ‘Jug jug jeeve’ (both composed by Sachin-Jigar), ‘Humdum’ (by Gourov Dasgupta), ‘Chitta kukkar’ and the title track (both composed by Manan Bhardwaj) are decent numbers. Lyrics (Kausar Munir, Priya Saraiya, Kunwar Juneja, Manan Bhardwaj and traditional) are effective.

Jaggi resolves to hold her to her word and throws caution to wind. He enters Europe illegally and lands in a whole lot of trouble. That is his prerogative of course, but the fact that he takes well over two hours to prove the intensity of his love results in unalloyed tedium.

No kidding when I said the music album is peppier. I wrote this entire review with Barbaadiyan in the background. The title track ends on the line “Tujhko Sazaa Aur Adaalat Banalu”, I hope half of the passion gone into writing this line was used to enhance the screenplay more. Shiddat could have been a perfect entertainer.

There aren’t many characters in ‘Shiddat’,’ which is refreshing, but their individual arcs could have been more sharply defined. There is little conviction in Mohit Raina and Diana Penty’s story that seems to exist merely to aid the central storyline, which is fine, but it doesn’t feel organic. Sunny Kaushal has the hardest time playing a bouncy lover-boy with serious boundary issues and while the actor gives it his best to make it convincing, his character graph starts becoming too hard to believe.

Nawaz is very good, channelling Ayyan’s seething rage into something we can empathise with; the tender passion he exhibits with Tiwari rounds off his character. Das, as Adi, is perfect, and the real star of the movie. Read the full review here.....
Ayyan sees his son as a ticket out of his lower middle-class struggles. His boss, too, isn't averse to bending a few rules. Yes, everybody in Serious Men on a downward moral gradient, be it a high-profile, entitled scientist or a lowly government clerk who derives great pleasure from turning the tables on his upper-caste boss at the first available opportunity. Read the full review here........
It’s like no other film that either Mishra or Siddiqui has done. While staying close to Jospeh’s skepticism about the idea of a just society, they have made the film their own by infusing an indomitable spirit and a certain kind of cleverness, rather cunningness, in the storytelling. Whenever Mishra goes political, Siddiqui ensures it doesn’t become an in your face sermon. Read the full review here......
Looming large over these characters is the BDD Chawl – 15,000 people crammed into 21 blocks. The chawl is a concrete embodiment of all that traps Ayyan, his family and everyone who lives there – caste, education, money, opportunities. DOP Alexander Surkala captures the claustrophobia of the one-room tenements but he also gives the spaces a dream-like quality. Read the full review here....
Another weak link is Acharya's characterisation, which is side-lined to give Ayyan's a stronger footing rendering the payoff somewhat underwhelming. Regardless of its unromantic conclusions, Serious Men never feels as dark as it really is or Manu Joseph intended it to be thanks to its film-maker's humane outlook. At the end of the day, there's always a little more to people than their politics. Read the full review here........
